Ok, well, our roommate just told us he is not staying. He is supposed to give us 4 weeks notice and now we are short $400 on our own rent! It is due by the 5th of Nov. Anyone know where I can solicit money from people to help us out this month?? We are desperate, I would try selling anything and everything, but No one buys, they always just pull you along and back out at the last minute. I need to raise $400 fast, please, this isn't a scam or anything. I'm not asking you directly for money, even though if you have some to spare, that would be greatly appreciated! And if you do, maybe we can work out some kind of loan.
I'm sorry this isnt the place to post this, but I don't know what else to do!

Talk directly to your landlord & explain your situation. They may allow you some leeway this month. Hopefully the leaving roommate is on the lease so the landlord can go after them.

is that in writing??

best way to get 400 bucks is ask relatives and talk to your landlord.

verbal contract stands up in court, it's just harder to prove it. I have no money or time for court either way.
I've been trying to contact her, but no answer yet. Either way, getting a roommate takes FOREVER and is so stressful. Took us 4 months just to get this guy, and no he's up and gone.

Is there a Salvation Army nearby? I know the one here in Page County pays certain bills for people sometimes.

if his stuff is still in the house change the locks....it is not a very professional or moral thing to do but it is effective.

change the locks for sure, or have them re-keyed. most communities have some sort of one time help for these situations. here it's called comunity assistance trust. you can only use it once though. if he left his belongings, sell those.

you could always take out a payday loan... I hate doing it but it has got me out of pinches.

also.. change the locks and dont give him all his stuff untill he pays you-- he sounds like a low life scum bag and if it were me he would have a broken jaw

you could always take a loan at a pawnshop, Just bring in some items and when you have the money again pick your items back up from the pawnshop.

pretty sure you mean a PAWN SHOP

a pond shop sounds like the places I spend my saturday afternoon at lol

This is a good idea... but you are gonna need about 6-700$ worth of stuff to get 400 from a pawnshop.. they are scandalous as hell

i wouldn't do a loan that way unless it's absolutely necessary. pawn shops near me pay $.10 on the dollar... unless the items are brand new with the box and packing materials. $10 k in jewelry will get you between $250 and $900 in my experience. if you're going to do that there's other alternatives. there's play it again sports, used tool shops, jewelers (they pay a lot better for jewelry), etc.. talking to your landlord may buy you some time. go through your old junk. if the landlord gives you a break you might be able to sell some things. if that's the case there's plenty of places online (ebay, kijiji, craigslist, etc.). if you have an old car sitting around you were thinking about fixing up that's an option too. if you have any friends that are mechanics they can help with that too. one of my friends can get $200 - $400 just for a used radiator. sell the parts you can and then sell the rest of the car to a junkyard. used appliances might be another option... depends on what you got and what's near you.

imo loans of any kind are not the best route to take when you first fall on hard times. it's better to sell what you don't need and work to get it back than to put yourself in a hole you can't dig out of. i would talk to my landlord either way because if things don't work out you can easily come home to an eviction notice on your door. at that point there may be no talking. you can open up your options and take a lot of pressure off if your landlord is understandable... in many cases they are and they'd much rather take their chances with a resident that's been paying and is having a hard time than redoing the place and hoping they can find another renter.

in any case good luck and i hope things work out for you.

Okay, first off, relax.

Your rent is due on the 5th, right? Do you have a written lease with the landlord?

If your rent is not paid on the 5th, your landlord can't come knocking on the door on the 6th and tell you to get out, you know. You have an established residence, and there are laws that have to be followed in order for you to be evicted. I am sure it varies from county to county and state to state, but I know where I live, it can take up to three months for someone to be evicted.

Do not take out a loan. I suggest contacting Salvation Army or the Department of Human Services. BUT, I can tell you right now, unless you have a LEGAL eviction document issued by the court to the landlord, they are not gonna pay SQUAT. They aren't gonna pay $400 just because you say so, and you will probably have to file with DHS and get a turndown before SA will pay anything at all.

So, what I would do, is write a nice, polite letter to the landlord, telling her what has happened. In your letter, propose a payment plan for the amount of the rent that you do not have. Be very specific - outline the exact dates and amounts you will be able to pay. Apologize and express a wish to work this out. Then send it by registered mail, keeping a copy for yourself. If you do get taken to court, it will go a long way for showing that you tried to work things out. Make sure that you make the payments you propose on time.

Get an ad up for a new roomie right away! Oh, and I second the changing the locks and holding property until payment is made.

Having two kids and a (now) ex-husband that is an alcoholic, sometimes you learn things the tough way. I am not proud of it, but there it is, lol.

I would begin by selling some of your aquarium stuff. I know its harsh given that we love our fish stuff, but its an easy way to raise money. once you are back on your feet, you can easily get back into the hobby at any time. lots of people on this board and MFK sell setups to raise cash for situations that come up in life...it happens all the time.
