Hey guys,

I've had my 20 tall setup for about 3 months now. Currently I've got:
2x Bolivian Rams
10x Harlequin Rasboras
1x Pitbull Pleco (Goby Pleco)

The issue is that the Pitbull Pleco sticks to the wood I've got in there, and doesn't clean the glass. He's never very active at all, just hides all the time, and I wanted something that was a little more active. Is there any other options that would work with my tank/stock, and possibly eat diatoms off the glass?

Thanks.

EDIT: In researching the subject it seems like perhaps the Pitbull Plecos enjoy a companion or two, perhaps picking up one or two more of them would help?

never buy a fish with the hope of using it as janatorial staff. Plecos are waste machines.. and acctually create more harmful waste than they eliminate

if you must... get 2-3 mystery snails. they will eat the algae and dont create a lot of waste of their own.

otherwise.. invest in a razorblade and quit waiting for the fish to work for you! lol

mystery snails (brigs?) are not very efficient algae eaters IME. They are about the snail equivalent of a plec...produce more waste than any "cleaning" they may do.

Diatoms should be easy enough to wipe off own your own.

Why not? I love caring for my fish, and doing what is necessary to keep them happy so they can flourish and grow, but why not try and get a helping hand? I don't see why you wouldn't hope an algae eater would eat the algae off your glass instead of spending time having to scrape the algae off yourself. I wouldn't get rid of a fish I purchased just because it wasn't behaving like I wanted it too (barring some sort of aggressive attitude that puts my other fish at risk), but of course I'm going to try and take a load off my plate when making stocking decisions. Is there something wrong with my reasoning?

I think this is my best choice.

I don't care how many algae eaters you have, if you have algae they will never eat all of it and you will always have to do a little work to get rid of it. If you want to get rid of your algae problem then attack the problem systematically... why do you have algae? Lights on too long? Overfeeding? Etc... If you figure out why there is a problem you can fix it, don't just throw a "clean-up fish" at it.

i wholeheartedly agree with tekonus. if you have a problem in the tank then it is up to you to fix it, not the inhabitants of the tank.

i'm always scared to clean my algae because i have ottos and hillstream loaches. What if they run out of food?! :nilly:

if they run out of food just feed them :)
