finally got enough time to do some fish stuff I've been wanting to do for a week now.

First, I got the new 10g fish ready, and now Nemo, the beta fish, is exploring his new home. I’ll keep watch on him before adding some neon tetras in a few days.

Then, I did a gravel transfer in my 20g. I kept about a gallon and a half of the original water, and about 1/2 a pound of the original gravel. I made sure to dump the gunk at the bottom of the tank so that that gross water wasn't included, and I did a major gravel cleaning before I did the transfer, to make sure most of the awful gravel water didn’t poison the rest of the water.

The fish are back in now, and they are doing fine. They are swimming as fast as ever and exploring their new surroundings. I'm a little worried because the water is a little bit cloudy. I'm sure its from the gravel, even though I did clean if very thoroughly.

They don’t seem to mind the clouding. I tested the water right after doing the change and the ammonia was up a little bit, somewhere between .25 and .50. The fish aren't showing any obvious signs of ammonia poisoning, though. I assume the ammonia is from when I drudged up all the nasties from the bottom of the tank.

I was thinking about not feeding the fish for a few days, and doing a 1/4th water change every day, or every other day until I get the ammonia down again. Is this the right thing to do?

now that I have a better base gravel I can start getting more plants, I'm pretty excited about that.

How many inches deep is your gravel?

You should be ok feeding your fish at least once a day when performing the 1/4 daily water changes

With a 20g i would go with 10% daily changes, if your fish behaviour seems normal they are doing ok

The clouding passed after only a few hours. The gravel is sloped, sloped a bit too much right now, I'll fix that when I change the water tonight. it's at about 3 inches in the back and 1/2 up front. The fish are acting just fine, not a single fish has shown a change in behavior.

it was particulate matter that "plumed" up when you did your tank maintenance

even after the most thorough rinsing, the gravel will still retain some particulate matter
