My new Eheim 2217 arrived today, but it has some (I think) minor damage. It's one of the slots that the clip hooks onto to hold the top onto the canister. I'm thinking it's safe to use still, but want to be sure before I do anything else with it.

Picture attached...

Thanks!

Another view of the filter with the clips in place on one of the un-damaged slots.

So your saying the hold down clip has nothing to hold onto basically like missing a clip, or are we talking cosmetic?

If the clip cant work you can test it in the bathtub but logically if your missing a hold down clip the ability of the top to remain seated and prevent leaking under pressure has been compromised and could catastrophically fail.

No, the clip has something to hold onto, it's just the part on the inside that prevents you from being able to see inside the top of the filter is missing. The clip still works fine. I'm assuming it is cosmetic, but since that is where all the electrical stuff goes, and it appears that the output back to the tank flows through that part of the filter, I just want to be sure that that missing piece won't cause me pain.

Actually I just realized the housing itself is cracked as well. :( Darn darn darn.

Called Petsmart, and they're sending me out a new one, expedited shipping (I asked nicely) so I'll get it Monday most likely. Hopefully the plants and snails will be OK for a few days without the filter on it. I will probably put the little aquaclear HOB on there, but that will be almost useless on the 75 gallon... I guess if nothing else it will at least help keep the water moving.

*grrr*

Well that's good news about the replacement, now you have a bunch of spare parts and with a little DIY ingenuity could probubly be fixed. Im surprised they diden't just offer parts replacement only. Good for you.

oh - they're sending a label for me to return the damaged one. I don't get to keep it for free. :)

Never accept anything that is not perfect. It's your hard earned money and there was nothing deficient with your money.
The seller easily returns things to his supplier.

I have two of these 2217s and they are over 2 yrs old. They are great. I just had a little difficulty priming them when I service them. Didn't understand how simple it is.

Well I'm glad you have two, because when the new one arrives, I will need someone to walk me through how to put the stupid thing together. The instructions were useless...

if it is brand new it should never be brand-new-and-partially-broken

Agreed. if it hadn't been cracked, but had just been slightly damaged, i was going to call and demand a partial refund. But since the housing is cracked too, and I'm not comfortable with the safety of using it that way, I decided to just return it altogether and get a new one that will hopefully arrive undamaged.

if you need help I can walk you through putting it together I have the 2213 which is the same filter.

Priming them is simple; insert the intake hose into the tank and suck on the other hose to get a siphon started. I hold the outflow hose over a bucket until it fills partway (hose, not the bucket) then reattach the spray bar and plug the filter back in. Once the filter is running you can simply close the valves, disconnect the hose, then put it back together after cleaning. Since the intake hose will still have water in it you don't have to suck on the other hose to restart the siphon.
