At what rate do these fish grow. I have a 29 gallon tank and was wondering how long i could keep a pair of one these(maybe eve just a single oscar or jack dempsy) until i had to get larger tank. There would also be a catfish? I cant really find any copmatible fish. Does anybody else have these fish with other fish or critter in the tank with them. I guess i was wondering if they would eat a crab or crayfish?
both cichlids you mentioned...in my experience, they grew pretty fast. I don't know what's other people's experiences. My oscars grew an inch each month. My JD did the same until recently (currently 4") slow down on the growth.
If not enough room in the tank, I have strong belief that the bottom dweller(s) will get bothered by the cichlid.

do you cycle the tank and what type of fish do you use?

I used fishless cycle.

if they didnt kill each other, how long would two jack dempeys fit into a 29 gallon tank

Depends how big you JDs are when you get them. Mine was 1.5" when I got her. Took 3 months for her to reach 4".
In 29g tank...if you have 1.5" JDs, I'll suggest 2 for now, but you need to upgrade the tank within couple months.

In my experience with oscars and that exact size tank, I would only keep at most 2 fish. I had an oscar and a bottom feeder. What filtration are you using?
