So I have a 40gallon breeder tank that has an Marineland Emperor 400 as filtration, sand substrate, and a visitherm stealth heater.

I have gone back and forth in my head about what I really wanted to do with it. I wasn't sure if I wanted to do a community or do a cichlid tank.

So I was wondering if I could put any cichlids in this 40gallon or if they all needed to be in a 55gallon+

I am quite new to cichlids, but I think I can at least partially field this one. You should be fine to do Tanganyikan shell dwellers or Apistogramma (Dwarf) cichlids in that tank without any problem.

If appropriate species were chosen, I think you could do a Malawi tank with 40 gallons also.

Thank you Winterymix I'll look into those types of Cichlids and the Malawi tank :)

yes, you could do many different malawi fish, just keep the stocking levels reasonable, and over filter. I would say have a few electric yellows, an ahli, a johanni, an aulanacara and maybe a white socolofi and you would have a nice colorful display.

The Trawavasae in my picture is nice too, but in a 40, he would probably beat everyone else up...
