It seems like I have perfect water for them... pH around 8, slightly hard, great buffer...

But would a 10 gallon be too small? Do I need a group of them, or would 2 females be fine? I love their coloring, but I don't want to make a mistake by buying a fish that I won't be able to keep alive.

a 10 gallon is too small I think, especially, as long as I am correct, they prefer to be kept in groups. You do have great water for rift lake cichlids though, have you thought about keeping shellies? They stay small and would be perfectly happy in the 10gallon.

I don't really know much about them, and I don't recall seeing any in my area. I'll probably just stick with some new platies :D

Yes, yellow labs get too big and too aggresive for a 10g. You do have good water for rift lake cichlids but only shllies will really fit into a 10g.And even then only a pair or trio(some are colony breeders).
