Hey guys, I'll be starting a new tank soon, prolly after Christmas. I want to get a 10 gallon saltwater tank with just a mantis shrimp, most likely a g. smithii if I can find one, but I really have no experience with saltwater. I've been able to keep a 28 gallon freshwater tank going for almost a year now and I think I'm ready to move on to saltwater lol

So my question is:

What do I need to succesfully maintain a saltwater tank, esp. for a mantis shrimp?

And what are the essential items I will need? And recommened products?

unless its a reef tank, saltwater isnt that much different from fresh

to make a mantis shrimp tank, you would need is live sand, live rock, a filter, a light and saltwater. i would get a powerhead too but its not that important if your filter has a high gph rate. to test the water a hydrometer for measuring salinity and a saltwater test kit is all you need

reccomended hydrometer and test kit

i keep a neogonodactylus wennerae by the way....

awesome! thanks for the help. I thought of another question though...when I do my water changes how do I measure how much salt to put in? and what percentage water change is recommended?

Also, would neogonodactylus wennerae do well in a 10g? I was considering one of those if I couldn't find the other species.

you pre mix the recomended amount per gallon of marine salt with water, usually you would always have SW mixing for water changes. use the hydrometer to measure the salt % and dilute or add more salt as needed, it should be the same as the salinity in the tank

always add fresh water for top-offs tho

i actually have a larger SW tank that i recycle water from to give to the mantises tank, but you dont really have that option or need it

a N. wennerae would do fine in a 10, i have mine in a 6.6 gallon tank

I use a Pure Flow RO/DI.. theyre Critical with SW, well maybe not cause your not doing a reef but i would recommend looking on MarineDepot for one that suits your needs.

www.LiveAquaria.com also has some mantis shrimp i dk if the kind your looking for but check it out
