I added my first fish to a 20 gal tank (five golight tetras and one julli cat). I conditioned the water, added proper amount of biospira with the fish and fed them a small amount. I tested for amonia a couple of hours late and got a 1.0 reading (I didn't test for it prior to adding the fish). I can't understand where the amonia is coming from so soon. I also thought that I wouldn't have much amonia with the biospira. The question now is what to do. If I do water changes, how much and how often should they be? Also, will the water changes remove the bacteria from the biospira? My glolights are just haning in the tank. Please help!

even with bio spira the bacteria still have to conlnize its not an instant cycle. I would change about 10 percent of the water everyday and hopefully your fish will be fine but you might loose a couple. You will remove some of the bio spira and you could add it back with the water changes but maybe every couple days.
Good luck I hope your fish make it and dont worry things will get batter after the cycle.

Thanks. I'll try to remain calm.
