A friend of mine gave me a 29 gallon tank today that he no longer had any use for...he had drilled a hole in the back of tank through the glass for some sort of filtration he had going..however, i will be using just a hang on the back style and was wondering, what can i do to plug this hole up?? Its about an inch or so in diameter...i thought about siliconing a small plate of glass over it on the inside of the tank...any suggestions?

use a 5cm by 5 cm piece of glass and cover the whole thing in silicone and put it on the tank and let it dry for 72hrs before you do a water test on it.

Personally id just buy a bulkhead, and then either a threaded or slip plug.
