why does saltwater splash if there is nothing being dropped into it. Like when I do a water change I have to wipe salt spray off of my light reflectors also or they will become heavily spotted and damaged.

Any little air bubble popping at the water's surface and the rippling of the top of the water are enough to send small amounts of salt spray everywhere. Even if it only happens a few times an hour, all of that adds up quickly and becomes quite noticable.
