anyone know why cardinals lose their red when the lights go out?

The first time that I was up early and switched the tank lights on right away and all my cardinals were "asleep" and just blue and white it really freaked me out...

Just curious...

It's normal..many fishes' colors 'wash out' at night during rest. No worries.

Pigment colors are likely to wash out during sleep. Refractile colors (depend on irridescence) are less likely to wash out but that depends on the particular fish - these are still under hormaonal control.

i though my clown loach was dead because i had the light turned off last night and i got up for a drink and wanted to have a look at them and he was on his side upside down and pale looking so i stuck my finger in and tapped his side and he was out cold sleeping lol.

My africans lose some of there color at times. also i saw my big gold serverum on the bottom face down with his eyes pointed down. I thought he was dead and tapped on the glass and he didnt move, i saw him breathing a little, so that relieved me some. I decided to just go back to bed and the next morning he was out and about.

but just in response to the clown thing - i have 3 n haven't gotten to see this behaviour yet! i'm bummin it souns funny! although i know i will freak n think they are dead when i see it ! lol - although every night about 9 they all dissappear somewhere in my tank together - don't know where though - i believe to the back of the tank behind my fake log there is a column of tall fake plants you cant see the bottom back there n i think this is there "spot" now recently though one of them has decided he doesnt like bedtime n spends time alone searching for food - the funny thing is i sleep with my tank lights on - n still at the same time with lights on the hide n don't come out itll morning - which is actually their night cause i shut lights off when i go to work!
