i like to catch wild fish around my town. and today i caught a small sunfish im guessing but i cant figure out what it is, my friend also caught a couple of small fish that i think are salmon juvies. any pics that you cant post with names will help me figure out what we caught. i would post a pic but i put them in my brothers tank. i live across town. but tomorrow im going to try and catch some more.

so here is some pics of the unknown sunfish and two different types of catfish. any help on identifying the sunfish will be appreciated. and the other unknown fish was no longer in the pond. the fish was long about three inches, it was silver with a kind of rainbowish tent to it. it was also thin like a hatchet fish.

i cant help with any identification, but why are you catching and keeping wild fish? surely this is cruel?

ummmm ever heard of the term wild caught

so long as they are breaking no laws how can it be cruel??

well yes i have, but to be honest i hadnt really thought about it and i wouldnt purposefully keep a wild caught fish.

 i just feel if they have known the big wide world of freedom to then be put into a tank seems mean to me, maybe im just too soft

Looks more Crappie than sunny to me.

Where do you think fish for a North American tank come from??

Fish don't just leap into tanks all by themselves...somewhere along the line the species had to be once wild caught. ;)

Hmmm...could be Cymatogaster aggregata, aka shiner perch? Other two look like bullheads but not sure if yellow, brown, or black based on the pics.

i was only speaking my mind. i just figured with all the tank bred fish species available why would you go out and catch wilds. im not starting an arguement, just the way i think of it thats all :)

Wild caught fish help keep the captive bred ones healthy Kelly. I hear what your saying to go from a 2,000,000,000+ gallon river system or a 20,000 gallon pond to a 60-150 gal tank. But if wild specimens werent caught there wouldnt be a large diversity of genes which would cause inbreeding which we all know is not good. I personally wouldnt want wild caught they tend to be more difficult to keep from what ive read.
