So I'm watching The Office re-runs earlier..got up to answer mother nature's calling - as I walked to the bathroom glanced down at my planted 75 and saw the Apisto Winkelfleck female all fired up chasing everything away from the Anubias forest. Then I saw something white moving around..got down to take a look and noticed a good 10+ fry swimming around. Very unexpected as I assumed these fish were juveniles and just picked them up at the MCA Iowa Chapter Auction.

Now, I got 4 of these as "Apisto Apache" from the auction a couple weekends ago and had no idea what they really were until one of the males started coloring that night. There's not much info out there on this breed, but from what I can find females turn gold, while males are a powder blue/silverish color with yellow tail. The female colored up about a week ago, and until I did the research I thought I had 2 different species of Apistos as "Apache" is a wholesaler term for about 20 species of lesser known Apistos.

Last night I noticed the female attacking the cories as they came near the Anubias...and this also explains why my big Golden Crystal Discus migrated to the other corner of the tank as she always hung out in this area. The (assumed) father is buzzing around higher elevations chasing off all the rainbows and other Apistos. The mother is keeping everyone away, including my 5.5" Red Turq Discus, who is as mean as they come but wont mess with her right now. She's pretty fired up. As much as I'm tempted, I'm not going to try and pull the fry or parents..hopefully they'll find a way to survive, but I'm not optimistic.

I managed to get a couple (very crappy) pictures of her and the fry. Not the best as this camera is a joke. Forgive the BBA outbreak on my Anubias. On to the pics!
