I just picked up two rats today! They are so adorable! I'll have pictures up maybe later tonight or tomorrow if they wake up (they've been sleeping since I brought them home!).

The only bad news is that they are supposed to be two males, and I think one is a female. I'm not sure, since males have the ability to pull their testicles into their body when they are scared. So I'm going to give them a few days to make sure they are both males. If not, then I'm gonna need to find some homes for the babies! And buy another cage.

Ok, Here are some pictures. The all tan one that is by the food bowl is the male. The white and tan one is the supposed female (I need to get a better look when s/he gets used to her home and isn't trying to get out of my hands). Just a few things before anyone says anything...

- Yes, they are in a hamster cage. This was temporary because I was moving some stuff around and putting some things in their cage before I put them in.

- The water bottle coming from the top does not have water in it (since all that does is drip). I attached a water bottle to the side for water.

- The food is a mix of gerbil/hamster food and rat food since the pet store I got them at fed them gerbil/hamster food (and I didn't want to completely shock them right away, so I mixed half and half of the food).

I think they are about 4 to 5 months, not sure exactly. Anyone have any input on their age? If you can tell? If they are only 4 to 5 months, there's the chance that she isn't pregnant yet, if she is a "she". *(Also a little note on the "she" thing. She has no testicles, and also has no nipples that I could find at all. I tried looking, but I need to get a better look once she calms downs.)*

You are correct about the 4-5 month part. I would suggest a large cage for two males since they might get territorial. My two are at the age where they fight constantly but still sleep togethor at night. I personally have a dumbo and a fancy :)

I adopted mine from Petsmart because the dumbo has a neurological problem and a clipped tail (They didn't know how it happened, might have been born with it or it happened at birth) and the fancy was given up because the previous owner didnt want a shy rat like him (He's a cuddler and LOVES to sit on shoulders and watch what you do).

And congrats ongetting 2 rats, they will be the joys of your life and make WONDERFUL pets. Extremely loving and friendly.

Yea, I've read all about rats and everything they need. I have a pretty decent sized cage, but I will be buying another bigger one. If they are 4-5 months, is there the possibility that she isn't pregnant yet? Or should I just consider her pregnant since she was in a cage of other males, but the same age. If she isn't pregnant yet, should I separate her now? I know I probably should separate her now anyway.

I also got a better look at her, and I'm almost certain she is a girl. The only weird thing is I can't find her nipples, and that's what originally led me to believe she might be a he. Although at the store, I swear she looked different. But I compared he to hundreds of other photos of female and male rats.

Congrats on the new ratties! Believe me, they'll scamper their way into your heart very quickly. I have two girls, Trixie and Pepper, and they're so sweet and clever!
