It's a well known fact that discus are shy by nature but is there anything I can do to make him more out going?
He was added to my tank Friday and to my surprise he seemed to adjust to it well, swimming up to the front of the tank some and not hiding too much. He would eventually go behing some plants if I stared too long but I figured it's the first few days and over all he doesn't seem to be too freaked out. All things considered I think it was a very successful aclimation.
So anyway, I accidently startled him this morning when I dropped the lid in the tank while he was eating, he swam behind some plants and didn't seem to wanna come out. I left my house and I'm hoping I can give him some time to calm down but does anybody have any tips on how I can get him less shy?

Don't look to get the little guy to come out if he doesn't want to. He will when he's ready. They hide when they don't feel secure and if they don't feel secure, they will become stressed out, stop eating and die. Give him lots of plants and places to hide - then he will come out when he's good and ready. It just instinc -and you're not going to change it.

55 gal, 1 angel that completely ignors the discus, they actually seem to like each other. 2 corey cats, 5 glass cats. Perfect water quality. 84 degree water. Lots of plants and driftwood. PH of 8 but this discus was bred in water with PH of 8.

The angel and discus hang out side by side, almost like they think they're brothers. The glass cats are almost non-existant in the tank as they never come out of hiding. The corey cats are your typical cories. Very peacful tank.

Your discus will feel much more comfy with 3 or 4 more discus with him. As pointed out earlier, discus are schoolers that prefer other discus with them.
