I am sure this was covered before but.. I am setting up a FOWLR 20 gallon. The wet dry I have is huge and could easily accomidate a 125 gallon tank. I have a protein skimmer in the wet dry sump. Should I keep the bio balls? Will they raise my nitrates if or when they get dirty? Will inverts such as shrimp and crabs maybe a mushroom or 2 be effected by the bio balls?
I've seen many people recomend removing the Bioballs and replacing them w/Live Rock and Sand to use more as a Refugium. I might just do that.

If the bioballs are allowed to collect debris, then you will probably have a nitrate problem. If you could set it up as a fuge with a deep sand bed and live rock, that would be great.
The livestock won't be affected by the balls, but you'll probably have an easier time in the long run if you get rid of them.
