Hi, I'm new. I was wondering if anyone had any anecdotal knowledge of heating cables for planted tanks. I have (obviously) never used tham and am seeking recommendations in terms of brands, wattages for a 40 gallon tank. Thanks!

Hi back, have you checked out the prices. I dont see the advantages. Way too much money. I was thinking of doing the same untill I saw 100 watt cable 154.99 from pet solutions and big als is a little cheaper but wow. Tim

i dont think it will help that much either, seen really nice tanks with normal submersibles, i also heard if you dont do it right it can crack the tank but im not sure on that one i just read it somewhere.

for a 40 gal, don't bother, unless you want to spend large amounts of money setting one up with a correct substrat and what not, they're just not viable.
they work good if, and ONLY IF you do it correctly.

Thanks for your replies, I'll most likely stick to just a submersible. . about substrate- I would like to use a sandy substrate over the planting substrate (I apologize if I sound like an idiot) I know not to use marine sand, but have read conflicting things on how and where to buy the inert " silver sand" . Ant thoughts there?
