Hi

Just a quick question how many fish are you allowed to keep in a berlin filteration system? the tank size is 550L and i have 8 fish. but many of them are small fish. the biggest is probally my dwarf lionfish. i read in a marine book that in a reef aquaruim you are allowed to keep 45cm of total fish length. and i have less than that.
Any advice would be great.

I hate it when lengths of fish allowed per a certain length of tank is stated...its crap...Each fish should be assessed on its adult size.

Whether a tank is Berlin or standard filtration ( not talking massively overfiltered tanks here ), the stocking levels dont differ in my opinion....

Dwarf lions will eat smaller fish so I'd keep an eye on him, if he isnt fully grown yet.. and Idealy they are kept 1 male to a few females.. I'm not judging just wanted to let you know if you hadn't checked.

Still, that is a 145gallon tank, which seems like plenty of room for your stocking level. The only fish I would be concerned about at some point would be your wrasse if it is similar in size to a cleaner wrasse.. may get eaten by the lion at some point. Also, I have witnessed a lion die trying to eat a clownfish.. couldn't swallow it and died from it.. so they don't always know exactly what size fish will fit in their mouths. Like Robert said, not judging, I really don't see anything wrong with your stocking/tank size at all.. just throwing out information.

Yeah no the lion fish is fully grown i reckon and i've had him for about 1yr and a half and the wrasse is far to big for him to eat. he eats both frozen prawn and live fish i catch. i funny enough also have a red banded coral shrimp that is of a good size for him to eat but he doesnt even look at it and when he swims past it the shrimp just attacks him.

Also another question. Is charcoal bad to have in a reef aquaruim. i have a bag in my trickle filter that i leave in there all the time and replace it every 5 months or so? and i have some sand maybe 1-2inches just in the front 3rd in the tank. will the berlin system still work.

It's not bad to use at all, but as Ace said, it needs to be replaced regularly. Various types will last for varying periods, but 4 weeks is usually the max even on the best carbons.
