I want to start a cichlid tank with firemouths and other compatible cichlids.
The tank is in the main room, so it will have to look interesting.
So far I have a male firemouth in the community tank, and a bicolor labeo will also go in that tank because he is too aggressive with our leporinus.
Any ideas?
Just really depends on the individual fish and the footprint of the 50 gallon tank. Stoking is always kind of dependent on those things and personal preferences of course.

Yea I have been researching cichlids a little bit and it definitely depends more on horizontal space than vertical.
This link (http://www.wetwebmedia.com/FWSubWebIndex/firemouths.htm) may help.

be careful with what you put with the firemouth as they can flip out at random and kill everything in your tank. I would say your best bet would be maybe 2 or 3 breeding pairs of convicts, acara's or maybe one or even two of each, they wont out grow your tank and look very nice.
Make sure as you add new fish you re landscape so they can claim there own territories and you should be fine.

Personally I would have gone with African Cichlids but thats me. They would look great in a main area of your house and are really active. Also come in many colors!
