How long would you wait to ask for a raise after being hired?

Well, I've been there 4 months. My boss continually praises my work, and they just fired someone else so they could keep me after my grant ran out.
I work in mental health. Now that I have made progress with a lot of the patients it would be difficult to replace me. But then again I know their budget is tight....

Agreed, not a good time and since you're already in a position to keep the job longer than expected, I wouldn't risk damaging that. Too soon and sounds like they may not be able to afford it anyways.
I cannot agree more Arturo. In this climate mental health jobs are the one of the first on the chopping block. Perhaps the person that got fired was let go to make room for you and they made more money. What is to prevent your employer from doing the same to you when they can hire someone else for less. BTW, nobody is ever irreplaceable

I agree with most of what is posted above, even though it sucks wait as long as you can. 4 months is too soon, really if I were employing someone I would not look to give them a raise until after a year. Unless they were on something like a 6 month probation.
