Anyone use these in their tanks?

They seem to do a great job, I'm just concerned that they might restrict organisms from getting to the main tank...

Wouldn't a filter sock almost be comparable to mechanical filtration?

Well, I guess it could, but the idea is the socks are the last point in the line for small organisms like copepods to reach, ie, filter sock is in the first chamber in your sump and your refugium is the second chamber, that way any pods from your refugium have to go all the way through your tank and back out into the sock.. I think the majority would stay in the tank or become food when they reach the tank. The sock is really good at removing diatoms in the water column without removing smalller things like beneficial bacteria.

But yes, a sock is a form of mechanical filtration, like just filter pads.. thing is, people usually don't replace filter pads nearly as often as they should... with socks they clog up and overflow out the top making it real easy to know when it is time to replace, and they are simple to wash and reuse.

If you allow the material to touch the intake, it'll clog very fast. I use the cheap thin carbon bags and I always add something to the area where the intake opening is so it doesn't get sucked into it and clog with all the dirt on the bag.
