View Full Version : Stupid question of the day......
Has anyone had any luck with snails in an oscar tank? I would like to get a few large snails to munch on some of the algae that is beginning to grow......but my guess is Gulp would view them as a crunchy snack. Do oscars like to eat snails? http://webpages.charter.net/dustlee/Pictures/Smilies/scratch.gif

Moving this over to the Cichlid forum. OG
There are many small snails that are very effective, and probably too small for Gulp to notice. I don't know if he'd go after larger ones or not--I'm thinking it's likely, though. With smaller snails, they could probably reproduce fast enough to outpace his predation.

I have mystery snails in with my jag, bullhead, and cons without any problems. The jag will go after smaller ones I throw into the tank, but spits them right back out.

I had a Mystery Snail in with my Oscar and JD. The Oscar liked to carry it around in its mouth and drop it on the substrate. It was too afraid to come out of its shell and eat so I had to move it to my dad's tank. Now it is in a tank with my convict and seems to be doing a lot better.

Try some adult columbian ramshorn snails. They get over 2" and are nearly too big for an oscar to pickup. Pretty looking snails too, unusual stripe pattern.
They reproduce in massive numbers too, and grow quickly.

P.S. They like to consume some plants though.
Thanks for the replies. I will just go buy a few different sizes and see what works. I have a feeling Gulp is going to pluck anything that tries to climb up the glass off and crunch it......but it's worth a shot. If he eats them, I will be out a few bucks.....but he will have that "variety" in his menu. :D
