we got em locally finally.

http://www.record-journal.com/articles/2004/01/05/news/news01.txt

and holy cow! they want $10 a pop!

now why doesn't it surprise me that the store that sells painted glassfish is the first to get them.......

they're also promising red, green and blue.

i was debating buying one or 2 just for the science of it, but i have no place to put them and i'm not blowing $10 a fish on them. so much for seeing if they gave my oscar glowing poo. :p :D

seriously tho, i admit to being highly curious. i'd be sort of interested to see if they would breed or not, amongst other things.

on an argueably positive note, won't these things put painted glassfish out of business?

Good lord, I can only hope. They've had them around here for about 2 weeks now. They are not selling very quickly, according to the LFS, though there is a LOT of curiosity about them. My main complaint is that the vendor is not providing any information to the LFS, so the employees had no clue why they were red, or that they glowed, much less why they glowed.

Luckily, they're not here yet. Too bad the painted glass fish and fruit tetras still are:(

Sigh...

Wasn't that actually from Poltergeist?

I finally got to see what they look like last weekend in person at my LFS.... I must say though, they were a bit different looking than when I saw them online.....they were certainly danios but with tints of color, not blaring like I saw on the several different websites. The did however, have a sheet of info hanging off the bottom of the tank describing the who's, what's, and why's about them, my lfs is pretty good with info and stuff...... anyway, they were also marked at $9.99...... although curious as well, I couldn't bring myself to buying a danio for that kind of money....glowers or not..... but like you said, everyone to each his own..... apparently they were selling like hotcakes.

yes theeeere here is form poltergeist, a movie i hated. i havent seen these glow fish do they glow all the time or only when the lights are out? i seem to remember they were geneticaly enginered. god only knows what their offspring might turn into.

OrionGirl

The glowing is only under a black light. Under regular lighting, they have a red tint, not even as bright as a neon/cardinal stripe.

Apparently a lot of people think they glow in the dark... :D

Since these are patented fish, there are only a few distributors that have the rights to market them. I'm not sure if they are fertile or not, but certainly if they are, you would not be able to sell them back to your LFS.

A danio fry that has the same color pattern as it's parents--just like the offspring of any other danio. Let's not be alarmist here, huh?

It didn't sound like an intentionally alarmist comment to me.

Sounded like a viable concern for anyone whos only vaguely heard of these monstruous fish (yes, monstruous lol)

Oh well..

I remember hearing that they're sterile anyway? (too lazy to go to the post about it and look)

I wish I had something on-topic to say...

Because all I can think of is off-topic... it was 'they're baaack', not 'here' wasn't it?

for about $7.00 each - gave them a long hard look - can't see what the big deal is - just a red tinted danio- honestly i think the golden ones for .79 cents each is nicer - i bet the price will drop once they've been out for a while - i have heard they cannot reproduce though

Heh...close, but Carol Ann(the little girl) said "They're Heeere" in the original Poltergeist, and "They're baaack" in Poltergeist II.

OK, that makes sense. I never saw either movie, all I remember is the commercial for the second one, I guess.

I was wondering, has anybody looked at their normal fish under black light? I have 2 different K bulbs and when my pearl danios swim just under the surface, they are totally different colours under each bulb (apart from their normally different appearing pearly colours).

It's kind of funny that people are selling them for ten dollars, and the "official website" or whatever says the suggested retail is five dollars. You're right about the pearl danios changing too. When the lights are on, they're the pearl color, but when they're off, they look like they're dark blue with a red belly...I've been thinking about putting them in an unlit aquarium because I think they look a lot cooler that way.

Daytime Viewing – A traditional white aquarium light (such as a fluorescent or halogen light) is ideal for daytime use. Because GloFish™ fluorescent fish absorb light and re-emit it, the fish's color will appear brighter and more vibrant as the amount of light used is increased. White gravel will further deepen the color since the reflective white color of the gravel will increase the overall amount of light in the tank.

Nighttime Viewing – In cases where the room is completely dark, a black light will create the appearance that the fish are glowing in the dark. This is a truly stunning and beautiful way to display your ornamental fish at night! But please remember that the black light will only be helpful in a completely dark room. Using a black light during the daytime will not result in the fish demonstrating its true beauty.

This is from www.glofish.com While their advice on setting up a tank is laughably simple, I do think they know what they are talking about regarding the glow-in-the-dark effect.

just a passing thought....
wait a second...... isn't the whole point of "glow-in-the-dark" to have something "glow" with no lights? I understand how the blacklight works and brings out all the colors and all that, but seems to me like it kinda takes the "glow-in-the-dark" idea somewhere else...... bad name I guess..... who knows....

I agree with loudmouth. I saw some in an LFS here for $8 the other day and was less than impressed. I too will keep my 79 cent ones instead. Kyle

Aquarium Adventure in Ohio(at least the Columbus store) has them for $6

Hey! now that I think about it, for $6 it is almost worth it to buy a few and feed them to my Oscar and see if his Poop will glow!

Our lfs got them a few weeks ago, before they were supposed to have been released. think they are selling them for $5 or $6. And as to the comments about they are just as bad as the glass fish...well they aren't, at least these are healthy and functional fish that didn't go through any harm to get the way they are, unlike the glass fish. The danios should live to their expected life spawn unlike the glass fish again.
