So I have a 10g tank with 4 little goldfish in it. and i have a strong 20g filter for it and several plants. my question is that the filter produces a strong current and would the goldfish prefer if the current went the from left to right the length of the tank, or the traditional hang on back and the current is just on one side?

Hi Vamp,

Could you please tell us what variety your goldfish are? Some varieties can tolerate currents just fine, mostly the singletails but others will have trouble swimming around well with strong currents sweeping them around. You can either divert the current upward or use a spraybar to disperse the currents if it involves a filter output.

On a side note, please note your tank is really overstocked with four goldfish in a 10g. Assuming your goldfish are fancy types, they need at least 10g per fish. Doesn't mean though a 10g will work fine for an adult fancy goldfish that is 6-8 inches in length. A 30g would be the minimum and can fit at least two fancies for some time.

Pond types such as shubunkins and comets need 20g of space per fish and the minimum tank size I'd suggest to begin with for singletails is a 75g as it's wider than the 55g. If what you have are pond types, I'd suggest upgrading the tank as soon as you can. A 10g will severely stunt your goldfish.
