well, today we went to visit my sister in law, her other half has a 4 foot tank with 6 comets and shubunkins (over stocked i know) the tank is hideously dirty and only has an under gravel filter in there which he keeps turned off most of the time as he doesnt like the sound of the bubbles :screwy:

well im sitting, shocked, staring into the green mess of a tank, and a big plec slides along the front. i asked how long he had him for, and he said oh hes been in there for a while now, he eats all the algea and i put some wafers in sometimes too but i dont want it anymore so i think il knock it on the head :jaw-dropping:

well, long story short, he came home with me. he travelled for over an hour in a small plastic bag of water in a cardboard box, he made it just fine and was aclimatised in a bucket of water for around half an hour. hes now in my fancy goldie tank. hes in very good condition i think, and seems fine for the journey too. i know im grossly over stocked now. i have 10 fancy goldfish and a 10-12inch common pleco in 680 litres, but it doesnt look like he is going anywhere as my husband has fallen in love with the big guy. my plan was to rehome, but i guess not now  good job im running so many filters on this tank hey! a fluval fx5, 2 fluval 4+ and a fluval 3+.

well he made it through the night ok, hes now cruising along the front of the tank. his fins are all in good condition, and he seems nice and calm with the goldfish. im not sure if hes maybe a bit underweight though, he looks quite long and slender from the top, although it seems energetic enough. will try to add a picture soon.

You didn't quarantine him, hun? I would have done it regardless of the sources and treat him with 0.3% salt solution and praziquantel for 3-4 weeks.

well it did cross my mind, but at 12+inches he would have been somewhat crammed into the 15 gallon QT tank i have (shoehorned him in there and wedged him back out after a couple of weeks :nilly:). i figured since the other fish (although stuffed into the other tank) have been in there so long altogether (in excess of 6 months with no new additons etc apparently), if there was any illness it would have been apparent. im taking a gamble i know, but so far so good :uhoh: am waiting nervously on the edge of my seat for any hint of a problem in there!

on a good note, the big guy is also growing on me now, hes quite addictive to watch, although i found him an ugly addition to the tank at first, i can see why hubby loves him so much already. hes so big and graceful slowly gliding around in there  and hes certainly made a dent on the wall of algae at the back of the tank where i cant reach and have to get hubby in there with a scrubby sponge

Was it the pleco, Kelly? I need my eyes checked.:nilly:

 lupin, yes it is the pleco, ive just measured him aswell while he was on the front of the tank, hes nearly 13 inches long.
