View Full Version : anyone use KENS FISH fish food?

i just ordered 3 dif. types of food from kensfish. it seems all his food is vacuum-sealed in 1/2 lb bag amounts?

i was just wondering this will be my first time getting food from him, what does everyone do with the food after they open it up to keep it fresh? what is your take on the quality of the food? i dont like the store-bought algae wafters i bought cuz they'll sit in the tank for days if i let them, they dont seem to break down/soften up too easily....i'm hoping kens wafers wont be like that- or cloud up my water.

another thing i always liked about being able to go to the store is i could look at and see an expiration date. It seems to me i'll have no clue when his food was made or when it may expire?

I love Ken's pellets with earthworm! And so do my fish! I can't remember if there was an expiration date or not, but then I didn't look for one. I know I've never seen them sit for more than an hour.

I ordered the smallest amount available (can't remember if 1/4 or 1/2 pound) for that type of food, and I just put it in a container, like rubbermaid. If it wasn't going to be all used within a month or two, I would split it into smaller portions and put them in Food Saver bags and freeze them (marking the date and type of food on it). I try to order only what I can use within 3 months since prepared foods can loose their nutrients (flakes more than pellets or wafers).

Ok thanks!!

i figured i'd just use mason jars to store the food in once its opened. I have 5 fishtanks, 2 of which are 75 gal., so it seems like i go through food like crazy and to have brosed kensfish prices was a godsend!! for 1/8 lb (2 ounces) of bloodworms it only cost HALF the price of what HALF that amount (1 oz) cost me from the pet shop!! so to have bought the 2 oz. of bloodworms with shipping, it came to about the same amount as what 1 oz. would've cost me from the petshop. Ofcourse then adding on the 2 oz. of wafers & 2 oz of brine shrimp i was elated at the money i saved!

You are going to be hard pressed to find someone here who doesn't like Ken's food :)

I just open the entire bag and put all of it into those small microwavable plastic containers you get at the 99c store.

The quality is alright, my fish and inverts don't seem to prefer it over any other brand (except maybe the Nerites.. they only seem to like OSI for some reason), but the price for Kens is much lower. I'm not really sure about expiration dates.. I've been seeing a few threads around the net recently about packages molding, I really wonder how long ago some of them were made, and how long they last.

Many of us do this. It preserves it's freshness and you can pull out just what you need. I even use my vacuum sealer before putting mine in the freezer.

same here. I use freezer ziplock bags and try and remove as much air as possible them just keep out small tupperwares of what I feed daily.

my fish love the flake food, but tend to ignore the crumbles and stick/pellets. I end up feeding snails more than I do fish with the pellets/sticks.

I find the hardest part of getting Ken's food is deciding on a just a couple kinds at a time. He was very helpful when getting foods for my new discus. All my fish LOVE both the earthworm pellets & flakes but I like to feed a variety of types & brands.

I also like to feed a variety of types and brands, i feel its the best way to go. It just so happened that I ran out of bloodworms...and brine shrimp...AND low on wafers all at the same time. Since setting up the 2nd 75 gal tank i've just been flyin through the food! So i was gonna order it all online and I had his website link saved as a favorite & have browsed it a time or 2 before finally now using it. I'm eager for it to arrive :)

Kens fish food is amazing

I refuse to purchase any other type of food.. I keep an extra bag of whatever I use stocked in the freezer.

My livebearers love the earthworm flakes.. and I also use the premium tropical flake, cichlid pellets, sinking spirulina wafers and I have used his fry food as well.

Never had a complaint that I can think of-- its always amazing how fast he ships his items too

Would it make sense for a person that has one tank (50 gallons) to buy multiple bags of Ken's food? Seems to me like it would take me forever and a day to go through it all... Still contemplating whether or not to order.... lol

after finding www.kensfish.com I not only ordered his food in quantity, but his meds, the AC's & other accessories. not only his is prices very reasonable so is his shipping charges. note, click on ups vs uspo cuz sometimes it's less vs the other as you add on.

since I started a 72gal BF discus tank along with a 20gal angel tank, they all love ken's flakes. but since I also stocked up on Dr.F's frozen food sale a month ago, I am stocked for a long long time! I just keep the unused unopened bags in a cool dark place.

which reminds me, gotta feed them hungry buggers!

I refurbed a bunch of used and assorted equipment over the last year and a half and Ken and his family were a huge help. Anything that he didn't have listed he would find and order for me. Impellers and bearings for old Penguin filters, HOT Magnum pcs., A/C lids, you name it - and everything was cheaper than Big Al's or the others. He doesn't have a brick and mortar presence to sustain and his family gets drafted regularly to help process orders. All very nice folks.

My biggest surprise was a couple of things that I didn't think anybody would even bother trying to ship UPS. I used to work in the exhibit biz and we regularly recvd. fluorescent lamp shipments that were destroyed. Ken ships me T-5 H.O. lamps and fixtures with never an incident. Then one day I mentioned that I had a bunch of new tanks that I needed lids for but that I really wanted glass. He says no problem. A week later the UPS guy drags three boxes, that he bounced off of his bumper in the snow, up my driveway and onto my front steps. Glass lids for my 150, 210, 110 and two different maker's 75's. Not so much as a single chip...I was amazed. Oh yeah...and at about half of what the big pet box was charging.

As for his foods, I've tried most of his private label stuff and had good results with everything except the Vitamin flake. As for the angel flake, I start with that and add some krill, some spirulina flake and powder and some of his color bright flake or astaxanthin powder. My piglet angels jump out of the water for it (of course they'll do that for jsut about anything come to think of it). A couple of my more finicky won't eat the lighter flake (I think it's the same stuff that he sells for Goldies) but the rest gets eaten fast. Even with all of the high dollar additives that I mix it's still a bargain.

Some of the small pellets aren't a big hit but the golden pearls and decap brine shrimp are a huge time saver over my BBS hatching. My scrimps thrive on his spirulina powder and the plecos usually finish the wafers off before I can finish feeding the other tanks.

Meds, water treatments, air and water pumps. I'll bet 3/4 of the hardware in my fish room came from him and I've never had a single issue or problem. Check out his price on Guardian heaters or ATI sponge filters.

Don't usually gush like this but Ken's is not only a great deal but he's a rarity in this day and age in the way that he treats his customers.

Last note...he goes through so much flake food that I can't imagine you'll ever get fresher off the shelf anywhere. It goes straight from the manufacturer to him and it's all made right here in the USA without any Chinese melamine or lead or whatever else sneakin' in. I only wish he'd figure out how to start sellin' frozen foods.

I'm sure that there may be people that have been exceptions to what I'm sayin' but they are few and far between.

well! its great to hear so many good responses from kensfish! i'm glad i ordered.. like i said i had his site saved just never really the chance to use it. It does seem like its the way to go though if you have enough tanks to go through enough food that ordering his in bulk like he sells it would save you alot of extra cash!

kreesdqban- with only one 50 gal tank i'm not sure you would want to order from him unless you have a specific food your fish really like. I know when i had just the 75 gal i had some botias in there along with the other community fish that they loved bloodworms so much i moved up to a 1 oz. container of it that cost $11-$12! Even so, it took them awhile to go through that 1 oz. container. Now that I have 5 tanks and 2 of them being 75 gals though, to get 2 OZ. of bloodworms, double what i normally bought, for the SAME PRICE (including the shipping!) as what the 1oz. cost, I'm not only getting enough to feed all my tanks but i'm saving alot extra when i order the additional 2 oz. of brine shrimp and algae wafers- all of which are about HALF the cost of the smaller jars bought from the lfs that i fly through.

It can be a great deal if you have the numerous tanks/fish that eat up the food. If you only have 1 good-sized tank though it can also be a great deal like i said, if its a food that they really enjoy and you find yourself buying the larger bottles of it a little more frequently than the other foods!

Exactly my dilemma enthusiast lol. So until i get more tanks (hopefully in the future) I'll stick to lower quantities like New Life Spectrum ($5 on eBay) and other foods to keep my fish healthy. I have no choice but to keep Ken's website bookmarked after all the rave reviews everybody has given him.... lol

I order a 3 month supply at a time as it gives me flexibility. I save empty Tetra containers and put a month supply of food in it and the rest (that has been opened) goes into tupperware type containers that seal. Doing this made life easier for my wife and brother-in-law while I was in the hospital far longer than anticipated.

I cannot afford box store prices for the amount of food I buy and it costs me the same for 3 months from Ken's as a 1 month supply from the box stores.

The only problem I thought of was one of my picky, picky, picky Oscars wouldn't touch it but after 2.5 weeks decided that Ken's Premium Cichlid Pellets (7.5mm) tasted better than Hikari Cichlid Gold (Large Floating). Now he races to get Kens brand and leaves the Hikari to the other fish!

i just got my package of food from his yesterday! these bags are HUUUGE!!

i find it hard to believe that the bloodworms are only 2 oz!?!?!?! The good-sized jar i bought from the petshop for $10 was 1oz., and i filled it full and it looks like i could do it 2 additional times with whats still in the bag from kens! it looks more like 3-4 oz. than just 2 but its an incredible amount!!

The quality is phenomenal! the freeze dried brine shrimp comes in like, chunks of 'powder', that crumble really easily, but this package of brine shrimp has next to NO 'shake' at the bottom of the bag! they're all huge chunks of brine shrimp! superb quality!! the bloodworms look great as i said, brine shrimp great, the algae wafers i ordered is also a great-sized package! He even threw in an additional packet of "kens premium algae flakes", which i dont know if its something new he's promoting and just threw in there for free or if i accidently got it? but its awesome!! i never got free promo's of fish food from my food purchases from the pet shops!!

just excellent- great- wonderful. All good things. Fast shipping, just great 1st experience with him! thanks for all the feedback guys we are truly all one-in-the-same with our experiences with kensfish and at the very least this thread has spread that word and made him another customer! you will NOT be let-down you tried him!! he literally will save you hundreds a year if you are one of those people with a fishtank room, or even numerous tanks!

Jinks got me turned on to kensfish when she generously sent me some veggie pellets, from her own supplies, to help my Brigs snail that was feeling poorly and wouldn't eat anything else. "Mysty" loved the kensfish pellets. I get the ones with extra calcium, now.

If I need anything, from food to equipment and other supplies, I always check kensfish.com first, and if they have it then I order it from them. You can't beat their prices.

I've also ordered from him after I got my L144s from pinkertd. She threw in a small baggy of Ken's earthworm sticks and I gave them a try. My whole tank looked like something out of a UFC ppv. Kuhli loaches doing dances in mid day and wrestling with corys. Mystery snails fighting with Zebra danios. Bumblebee gobies squaring off with rasboras. It was nuts. Needless to say I ordered some and my fish love them... unfortunately I didn't get the second 1/2lb bag put away fast enough and it seems my cat loves them too. I think the dog even helped on that one. German shephard thinks she's a fish.

I'm starting to think Ken may need his own fan club. Ordered a nice stealth heater from him along with my food and he had the best price, even over Drs F&S and Big Al's. Super fast shipping, easy to navigate website, a free sample of tropheus lovers flake, overall great experience. From now on if its not an emergency I'm checking there first.

It's all part of Ken's insidious plot. He sells ya all of this reeeally good food reeeaaally realy cheap see...an' then ya feed your fish waaay too much, an' then..an'then...well you know they do what fish do when they aren't eatin'.
An' then, ...an' then your filter gets all clogged with fish pooh and and plant food, so your pump works too hard and BAM! Just like that you're out $400 for a brand new FX5, but no...I gotta pay the mortgage...but if I don't replace my filter all of my fish will die...so ya buy the filter...only you forgot, the filter doesn't have any media with it, so ya gotta skip payin' the utilities so you can order some more media and put a rush on it.

Finally after a few frantic days the fish are safe once again...except now you're lookin' at bigger tanks 'cuz the darn things have grown a foot since last month. The only problem is that the significant other said after the last tank that one more and you're gone...you and the fish...so ya by a brand new tank and throw some mud and crud off of the side of the road all over it so's dat you can tell her that ya bought it used out'a some old guys garage for $10...and it'll prob'ly leak anyway and ...hey honey, where ya goin' with that suitcase...?

And once again...Ken's Fish has brought the demise of another American family.

I just ordered Kens Premium Spirulina Sticks and Kens Premium Vegetatable Sticks(for my 2 plecos). I was wondering if the Spirulina sticks are good for my goldies. If not I'll eat them:)

Does anyone know which of Ken sticks are best for fancy goldfish? Right now I am feeding them "Saky Hikary Fancy Goldfish" and they are crazy about it.

100% Ken is the best. I did order(among many other things) the Finnex T5 HO 39 watt x 2 light fixture for my 30g tank. I got it in 3 days without incident. Btw, this light fixture is excellent, imo.
