I know everyone thinks they are gross, but i would love to do a little 2.5 or 5 gallon and keep some leeches in it.

whats a good way to find leeches?

go to a natural lake and lift over rocks in the water. they usually spend the days under stones and swim at night. at night you can find them swimming on the beaches in an inch of water with a flashlight. just remember they can and will climb out. they can squeeze through most anything. and what do you plan to use to feed them? your arm?

ill figure food out, a tight fitting lid can solve escape problems also horse leeches seem to be the ones that can clim out of containers.

also if i were able to get decent sized , clean and healthy leeches going i could killl some for fish food.
food seems to be zooplankton and rotting meat in water bodies, and for other leeches it can also or just is host blood.

I put a stone from a local river in my tank and ended up with a leach, and lots of copepods and isopods amongst other things in my minnow setup. It just feeds on these pods and hasn't touched my fish, it only feeds on very small inverts and is not a fish sucker... I only see it with a torch when the lights are out.

Back when I was in college and we were learning about this particular group of animals I recall some of them being quite attractive. Seems there is one that is striped like a zebra. I also remember reading about one guy who kept several of them as pets and once month or so he would take them out and let them suck on his arm until they filled up. I don't know if I could do that but I could see keeping a tank full of some of those real big honkers you see in the jungle movies if you could feed them some other way.

i've got a leech in my tank. i don't know what kind it is, it was in my driftwood when i put it in there. i'm surprised none of my fish have eaten it yet. its been in there for a few weeks, and i guess its been chewin on the driftwood. i dunno.
