So they got in a bunch of green gold corys at my LFS today, and I couldn't resist. I picked up 2 of them, I know they like to be in larger groups, but I'm holding out until I find panda corys, in the long run I'm going to have 6. I'm making this thread just to double check I'm doing everything right. I have a peice of blanched zucchini on the bottom of the tank for them to eat, I've also offered them bloodworms, flakes, and sinker pellets, they haven't eaten anything. I also shifted my driftwood and added a slanted rock for them to hide under. So far all they've done is picked through the gravel (I'm going to be adding a finer substrate later on), and they seem to be pals with my bala shark. Anything I should change or anything more I should do?

Congrats on the new cories. Yes, cories are shoaling fish so bigger groups make for more active and happy cories. As long as they have at least one other of the same cory species I think they'll still be happy. I have tons of cories throughout my tanks, but one of my tanks has only 2 false julii's and they are happily together around the tank always.

Cories do not eat veggies, including zucchini. But they should gobble down the rest of the foods. Assorted flakes, pellets and wafers and frozen bloodworms are standard foods for cories. If they are picking through the gravel, they are rooting for food morsels. Be careful of your gravel that it's not too sharp for them. While many gravels are round enough to suit cories, there are some types that are very sharp and would ruin their barbels. They don't absolutely have to have sand. All of mine are fine on small round river bed type gravel.

One of them died, I'm pretty sure I bought it bad from the pet store, it seemed to be fine in the morning, it was swimming around with the other cory and looking for food, when I got home a few hours later, it was belly up. I'm going to get more from legitimate fish stores, I only got these from a pet store is because I never see them and they looked healthy. I fed them bloodworms, bottom feeder food, and flakes, they never went up for the worms to compete with the angels and platys, but I think they were eating the bottom pellets. Any way to be sure?

Aww, sorry to hear that. Very often the cories in some of the LFS are in bad shape even though you may not see the outward appearance of illness just yet. It's one of the reasons I breed cories.

Cories will not eat out of the water column. The food has to land somewhere....in a plant, on a plant, on the gravel....on anything....just not directly out of the water. Go get yourself some more cories from a more reliable source when you can. They are endearing little buggers and every tank should have some of these little comedians!

Yeah, so far I've had everything but 1 cory die from the pet store, but all my fish from my not really local fish store live happily. Mine's a gold green, will he do fine with the neon orange or panda kind? I'd rather get more of them, and I'll have selection at the not so local fish store.

I know some people say that different cories will school together. I don't see that, so get the others type that you really want and see if you can get 1 more the same as the green gold. I have sterbai and albinos together and they are never together and I had black ones in with the sterbai for a while and they were never together. That's been my experience with them.

Yeah I had 2 types and they never schooled together, and the separate species were actually rather tight schoolers.

Is Redkahuna still around? I haven't seen him post lately, but that was where I got my cories, and what I'd suggest for anyone else!

I think you can reach him via email, it's probably listed on his profile. He's not on much here anymore, but still selling cories.
