View Full Version : Puffy Eye
I just noticed that my mature honey gourami has a slightly puffy eye on one side (not normal). It doesn't look too bad and everything else looks good. What are the causes of puffy eyes? My brother seems to think he might have rubbed it against a rock or something as his saltwater fish occasionaly due and it is just scratched and irritated or something.

usually brought on by stress i believe - is very serious - there are meds claiming to cure it but have never worked for me :(
anyhow with this condition the eye will get a cloudy glazed over look and bulge out of the socket usually bulging out till it either it explodes or the fish dies
goodluck
The eye isn't cloudy or hugely bulgy. It just protrudes a little more than usual.

of it - when did you notice the eye getting big? if it gets worse quickly then i woul think it may be a case of the pop - i woul go to your lfs and get meds - i think mardel makes a med for this - isolate fish in hospital tank just in case if you have one
maracyn2 if it's popeye.
it's caused by a bacterial infection.
otherwise melafix?
Well I picked up some Maracyn 2 and have begun the treatment as directed. So my question is (as it does not say on the package) will this medicine also kill off the good bacteria in the tank?
not that i noticed, you should be fine. it wouldn't hurt to test after a day or 2 to be on the safe side tho. :)

the bacteria in the tank - hopefully it works onyour fish too - i woul q him to a small tank if possible because pop eye is tough - but do water changes to and i woul medicate past the time listed on the package of course keep with safe guidelines
Well I have no extra tank for him at the moment, still looking to upgrade the platy tank so I can have a qt. So he has to be treated with his buddies for now. The meds say no to change the water for the duration of the treatment so I will be testing for ammonia. I did a big water change right before the treatment started. It says to treat for 5 days even if things look better so I will. This mornign things already look better so hopefully that is a good sign. Thanks for the help I will keep you all posted.
can it be passed onto other tank mates??
Iam still notquite sure what the cause is. In my internet searches popeye can be fungal, bacterial, an injury or a gas bubble trapped behind the eye. The maracyn 2 meds do both bacterial and fungal so hopefully it will work. No signs in the other fish but as I said no qt tank at the moment so he will have to be treated in situ. Not sure how it gets passed on.
