So, I have set up my VERY FIRST SHRIMP TANK! I am so excited and I was wondering if those RCS keepers out there could answer a few questions.
What do they eat besides grazing on algae?
Will CRS climb out of a tank if there is a heater and filter coming out of it?
Is there anything I need to watch out for?

I am so excited about getting my little shrimp! Thanks BandiCat!!!! :D

Thanks for you ideas in advance.....

Just to clear up something to eliminate confusion later.

RCS and CRS are different
Cherry shrimp are RCS
Crystal Red Shrimp are CRS

I have had shrimp for a long time. and i havent seen them climb out of my tanks, but I have seen shrimp climb out of a tank on youtube.
Shrimp are intolerant of Nitrite and copper. any rocks or stone that may contain copper will be toxic to your shrimp.

RCS will eat a variety of stuff, including algae, but also will scavange for any bits of food that may have made it to the ground in the tank. I feed mine algae wafers, crab & lobster bites, and sometime seven shrimp pellets, in addition to the natural algae that grows in the tank.

RCS are very prolific, and are tolerant of a wide range of conditions and temperatures. Mine seem to breed best in the 77-80F range.

they are very easy to care for, and you should have many more in a few months!

Thanks so sorry for the confusion... I am getting Cherry Red Shrimp. :)
So like should I maybe feed mine an algae wafer one day then a shrimp pellet the next?
And do you suggest I have a tight cover on the tank?

wish I could get me some of those little fellers for my planted tank, my lfs wants 4.99 a piece, I seriously thought the guy was joking when he told me that...wow:(

Mine LOVE blood worms!

How do you know if you have copper in the stones in your tank, Zig?

Well, I can tell you that the shrimp you are getting have always enjoyed regular tetramin tropical fish flake food. Just make sure if you are going to give them algea wafers they have no copper. The wafers that I used to give my pleco have trace amounts of copper in them, and would definitely not be good for my shrimp. They've also never climbed out of my tank, and I have both a heater that sticks out of the water and a HOB filter.

I can't wait till you get them either. You'll need to keep us all posted :D

I also feed mine thawed frozen spinach, I tie the large pieces with thread around a small rock. Zucchini slices cooked just enough to soften, they will sink to the bottom of the tank. I've not had any climb out of the tank. Do remember to put something over your intake to keep the shrimp from being sucked up into your filter. I use a foam pre-filter on mine and the shrimp like to graze on it.

$7.99 for me. I bought them here on the classifieds, for $1 each, and got 25, for what I would have paid to get 3 at my LFS.

Also I have never had cherries jump, or climb out of a tank, but I did have a red-nosed shrimp jump out of my tank twice. I saw it happen the first time, and put him back in, the second time must have been the middle of the night because he was all dried up.
