Yesterday at a cool lfs I saw a fish labeled Districhodus Fasciatus (mind the spelling). It was 40 dollars and about four inches long. This thing was really neat. it looked like a leporinus but with red fins and a boxier body. It sparked my interest and i kinda want to get it, but is 40 bucks too high. It looked to be in great health no tears or scratches. great color. it was a little inactive though. Anyone here keep or know about Districhodus Fasciatus.? There is scant info online about it in english anyway.

Think the spelling may have been wrong? Dischistodus fasciatus is the banded damsel--a saltwater fish. That's the closest name in Fish Base, but there are a variety of fish with the species name of fasciatus. You may want to check them out, for a closer match to your description.

no this was a freshwater fish in a tank with some SA cyprinids or characins. I wrote down the namme at the petstore, so maybe they are wrong, but is was spelled DISTRICHODUS FASCIATUS. It looked just like a shorter stouter leporinus fasciatus with bright red fins.

Also the tag at the store said it could grow up to 14 inches if that helps. I am searching fish base with little result.

Glad you tracked it down. They are pretty, but dang! 2 foot (75 cm) is one big fish!

Just to let you know.... These guys are aggressive. They WILL nip and harass your other fish tank inhabits. A Min tank IMO would be 120 gallons and larger...

Also.... When they get older (and bigger) their brightly colored orange and black stripes will fade.

Here is a link to some videos of this fish:

I had a group of Dist. Affinis. The problem with them and every other fish in that family is that they LOVE to nip the other fish in the tank! Even themselves. They are related to the tetra family (actually the largest members of that species)

here is a site with a question to the fish supplier....

So I would suggest a tank no smaller than 250 gallons....
