So I've got this empty 72 gallon tank that I plan on loading with some cichlid substrate but I need some recommendations on what kind to get. I wanna go the route that gets me the most bang for my buck....that is, lots of beautiful colorful fish for a good price:D

You can't beat an all male peacock-hap tank for color! Nice peacocks/haps when full grown are pricey, but if you buy then when they're small, just showing enough color to be sure they're boys, they're much more reasonable and then you get the fun of watching them grow up. A 72 gallon would be a perfect size. I'd say depending on which ones you get, you could easily do 14-15 individuals plus a group of synodontis multipunctatus . . . (I had such a tank and it was my pride and joy!)

wow at first when I saw your member name I was like YESSS!!! my girlfriend finally joined the AC because I call her Hollyfish sometimes and then saw the 2000...got confused...then the excitement wore off. Thanks for the advice, I have a local seller who breeds and sales most cichlids for half the retail of most pet stores so hopefully the peacocks and haps are cheap...my fav cichlid is an iceberg electric blue but I have no idea where to get one and how expensive they are.

Mbuna is defintely the cheapest route for me except there's one thing in the way that may seems odd. My brother who lives with me has a 30gal. Mbuna tank and although I like all of those species I just feel like I need something different and not the same. We are also identical twins so I think this plays a part in why I wan't something different. I don't strive to be different but I was thinkin I might go with the peacocks though they are more pricy.

my local cichlid guy has some 2-3inch peacocks that he's sellin for $13. does this sound like a good deal?! I plan on starting off with 6 of them in my 72gal. The cichlid guy has sunshines, rubin reds, OG and some others I'll have to ask about. Any advice on what 6 to get if I had the choice of any peacocks?

To the fellow looking for six peacocks -- I assume you're doing an all male tank? The "rule" is to keep peacocks that do not look like each other. So keep that in mind. I personally adore ruby/German reds and every tank must have them. Using layman's names, here are some other good peacocks that work together in one tank:

Red shoulder
Ngara flametail
Sunshine
Sulfurhead
Albino anything
Swallowtail

The jacobfriberghi peacocks tend to me a bit more aggressive, so something to consider. I've kept Eureka Reds and Yellow Jakes with no problem, but found Otter Points to be nasty

Good luck
