I'm set to acquire a new aquarium from a friend...
not quite sure what size it is as I've never seen it and he doesn't know and has yet to measure it. Based on his hand gestures I'm guessing it's a 20-25G.
Hoping someone can advise me of some cichlid options. What variety would be suitable for this sized tank? How many? How big will they get?Can I have different varieties in a 20-25g? Can any other types of fish reside with the cichlids?
Hope you can help.
Before we start, do you know what's the ph? And also, have you cycle the tank?

Haven't got the tank yet but excpect to.
Will of course cycle the new tank first this time as I'm learning my lesson with my first tank.
pH = 8
With hard water:
gh = 13
kh = 9
Any suggestions?

How about Shell dwellers? I have a 20 long, I started out with 6 adults...after a couple of months I had numerous babies, but had to trade in a couple of adults that were fighting too much.
Mine are neolamprologus multifasciatus. I now have one male with harem of females (about 3-4) and lots of sub-adult, juvies, and fry. They all get along and it seems to be a self-sustaining population.
I keep the ph around 8.2, and the water is very hard. I haven't had any die that I know of....but with that many I don't thing I would know:rolleyes: .
Good luck.

neolamprologus multifasciatus are a little smaller than I was hoping for at 1.25 ". Any suggestion on a bigger species or few compatible species that would live happily in a 20-25g??

How about a pair of Julidochromis transcriptus or a pair of Neolamprologus leleupi? I think a pair of Julidochromis ornatus could go as well. Other than some of these guys, your kind of limited to shellies.
