I ordered substrate from aquariumplants.com--Igot the black--I have a 20 G long and they sent me 3 gallons. I started putting it in my tank and after about 2 gallons, it seemed too deep. How deep should the substrate be. I will have live plants over about 2/3rds of the tank. They will be low light plants--cryps java ferns and saggitaria. l

Usually 1.5 - 2 inches should be sufficient I think.

I've got the same substrate in my tank. I have a 40 breeder, my substrate in some areas range from 1 - 3in.

It depends on you and your scape and what plants you've got planned. HC can grow in 1", swords cannot. 2"-3" is usually good for all plants, but you can put more in if you want it for your scape.
