my 55 g tanks heaters are set to 77 degrees. I never see the heaters going on yet the temp jumped from 79 to 80. This is really starting to bug me. Can my powerhead be causing heat inside my tank?

is the powerhead a recent addition? is it large with a small tank? whats the room temp?

they can bleed off heat i'm sure.......

all else fails, try process of elimination. unplug the heater(s) while you're home and see if the temp goes down. or unplug the powerhead and see if it drops.......

its a 55 gallon tank with a AC 802 power head with two tronic heaters. My magnum 350 canister filter motor seems to get pretty warm, but thats only where the motor is located, where the water actually is its not nearly the same temp as where the motor is.

What lights are you running? Even PC lights can heat the tank quite a bit.

thats what i was thinking but it stays warm when the lights are off too.

Oddly enough, it's easier to heat the water up than to cool it down, especially in a closed system. Basically, the easiest way for water too cool down is through evaporation. If the tank has a glass cover, evaporation is minimal, so the tank just retains the additional heat.

If the tank is covered, try cracking the lid for a while.

i actually use 80 in my tanks.... i tried to lower it once and coincidentally that tank came down with ich.

it's not going to hurt anything where it's at, unless you have cold water type fish. but you don't really want it to get any higher.

if it's only a degree or two variance it's actually sort of normal, but it wouldn't be bad to try isolating it.

Take one o ft eheaters out and place it in a bucket. PLug the heater back and in a whi;le test the temp. If your heater is set of 77 and the water in teh buket is still higher then you may have a probelm with your heater. Do this for your other heater too.

I can't see a powerhead raising the temp up unles you have a big powerhead in a small tank, even then i don't hink it would raise too much.

Lights could be a possibility, thats why its best to test the heaters. BEcause if they have casing the problem yo uwill know how to fix it. If they aren'tthe problem then start looking into different things

between 81-83 so they feel tropical - i think 77-79 feels a little chilly when i stick my hand in there
