Using a gravel vac?

I don't use one. Just siphon over/around the plants to remove excess detritus if needed. The stuff in the substrate is plant food.

I dont gravel vac any more because why would I want to take away any extra nutrients that the plants could use.

you could do it so that your fish dont have to swim around in their own feces. you need to get some of that crap out. you can use ferts to replace the crap

Yeah, the residue after some time is not a fertilizer. It's just crap. I vacuum out that crap during the water changes.. and there is so much of it.

I'm also wondering how you'd gravel-vacuum sand.. I kinda want sand, but it seems like a big pain to clean.

You skim it over the surface to pull the debri from the surface...but I rarely do...its good for the plants.

Crap is fertilizer, folks. Why do you think cow manure is so popular. ;)

I don't vac anymore since I went planted. i live on a farm and was brought up spreading cow manure for ferts on the fields, so I carry the same idea into the tanks.
