I've just got my boyfriend a new tank for xmas and a friend recommended we coat it with this first http://www.tankguard.co.uk/

it's called tank guard and it stops algae building up - has anyone used it? what do you guys think?

fishkeeping is more his thing than mine but I want to take an interest so any feedback would be great

thanks

What's the cost? I've never had a really bad algae problem. Every once in a while I'll get a little on the glass of a planted tank if I forget and over fertilize or it get's too much natural light, but a couple of swipes with a pad and it's gone.

Looking at their kit, it doesn't look too inexpensive for what it provides. Save the money and buy him a bag of Purigen to throw in his filter.

Impressive product, it looks like it doesn't contain any chemicals..but it costs 9.56 dollars, I think it's not worth the time unless you have a severe case of a algae outbreak or whatnot. To prevent algae from building up in the new tank, I would suggest doing daily 50% water changes every 2-3 weeks and make sure you do not overfeed;by doing so, you prevent algae from taking over.

I would say nonesense!! Algae is a healthy and normal part of an aquarium within limits. If you maintain your tank properly and regularly algae should never be an issue!

Never used it..not sure it is available over here. Most products like that are a waste IME.

Never had a serious problem with algae (knock on wood !), so I would say you don'y need it. Good tank maintenance will take care of most algae problems before they become problems, and that is free !! Good luck.
