I have a 35 gallon tank - dimesions 24"X16"X21"....I have recently (about 3 weeks ago) bought a juvenile blood parrot cichlid of an orangey-red color. Very timid fish, hides if someone walks by the tank too fast....and I came home last night to see that my boyfriend had added two more juvenile parrots to the tank! He apparently thought they were fascinating looking, went to the LFS and they told him that to make the parrot less shy it needed others of its kind around....he also was told that in a 35 gallon we could have up to 4 or 5 parrots because they "don't get bigger than 4 inches"

aaaah!!!! the lfs has a strict no return/exchanges/refund policy....what am I going to do??? I do not have the money or the room in my apartment to upgrade!

hi there your tank is to small for one bood parrot nevermind three. bloodparrots can grow to about eight or nine inches when they reach adulthood. i would think for one parrot a 55gal or bigger. i have two bloodparrots in a 75 gal and i want to upgrade to a 125 gal. you could sell them craigslist or go back to the lfs and complain to the manager that the sales person is giving false information. good luck.

your parrot is shy because it has to get used to its surroundings. it will settle in soon (if you decide to keep it) they are a fun fish to watch

I think one adult would be ok. I kept my beloved blood parrot in a 38 gallon for 12 years and he just passed away 6 months ago. He was about 8-9inches long and fat as can be! If i were close to you i would scoop them up to help you out, but my only advice is to try to rehome them or buy a larger tank for all 3. Maybe you can get a deal on a 75 and put those 3 in there together. I wish i could help more.:o

thanks glasman - the concern I have about craigslist is you never know who is taking the fish and what they are going to do with them, you know? it is a fear of mine....as bad as the conditions are now, it could always be a lot worse!!! they are all about 2-3" right now, so I have a bit of time before the situation becomes cramped.....I am going to try here and other forums to see if I can locate someone close to pick them up

I think you already know that your overstocked. However, if the LFS do not take the fish, I wouldn't stress too much. Your 35 gallon is okay for the three fish for the short term. Nothing detrimental will happen to you or the fishes for keeping them temporarily housed in the 35. I would just calmly but proactively see if you can re-home the remaining two fish and till then, just pamper and enjoy the fishes for the duration of the time they are under your care. Good luck! :)
