Hey everyone, first would like to say I hope everyone had a great christmas this year.

I have some questions though. My grandfather and I have been remodeling my moms house for sometime now. From adding wooden floors, to building a 12'x16' shed that is more like a house lol. We still have some work to do in the house, plus we always come up with things we just feel like doing, so you can kinda say me and my grandfather are redoing the house just cause we like to be working!

Well the kitchen is the next step. We just added wooden floors to the kitchen and whats next in my eyes is the countertops and back splash. Obviously we all like the look of granite but the price for it isn't the greatest. We have been looking though into other options.

I work at Lowes and I noticed in the paint department they now have a paint process that you paint over your current countertops to give it a granite(ish) type look. It doesn't look to bad, well atleast the very little sample they show on their brouchure.

A other option was looking at laminate. We have some good color laminate countertops and can always special order some.

I was wondering one, if anyone has used this paint on granite type of counter top? How do you like it?

The other is if you were in the same boat as us were granite was out of question cause of price what would you pick?

IMO, I wouldn't trust any type of paint product on a counter. No matter how tough they say it is, eventually something will scrtach/dent it. I would look into Corian or other solid surface products, although I don't know how it compares in price. Even solid surface veneers if you're looking for cheaper. The beauty of Corian is that you can resand it lightly with scotch brite for any minor blemishes because it's the same color all the way through. It can be kept looking new for a long time. It's the same as if you were doing a stained vs. natural hardwood floor.

i would have to agree... i have a corian cutting board and i love it.

I was going to say corian too, they are more durable and don't need resealing like granite. Also, the high definition laminate looks very nice. am trying to decide this myself actually.

I don't like Corian because of it's plastic like texture. It's just wrong to me.

I did a total renovation on the kitchen about 2 years ago. It started with new floors. We did hickory wood and I LOVE it. I just couldn't put those dark 1970's vintage counters back in the room on that lovely new floor so we did a total remake, completely changing things. I looked into granite - didn't want to spend that sort of cash. I looked into Zodiac, liked it, but again, too spendy after all I had spent already. We ended up doing ceramic tile and honestly, I really love it. We used a product called Spectra Loc for grout. It's an epoxy grout that doesn't have to be re-done. It's held up well and is easy to clean. The tile I picked has an edge piece which most people use as a chair rail. I used it as an edge cap on the counter top. We got it at Lowes, so you can probably find it in the tile section.

Here's a few pics:
This one is all I have of the counter tops, and it's not great. The back splash is done but we capped it with a little shelf of maple which isn't done yet in the photo.

Here's a few of the flooring:
We have three coats of poly on the floor and it's held up very well. I was a bit hesitant to put wood in the kitchen, but I am glad I did. We really like it.

For some reason, petting the cat with an oven mitt on is fun to a small child.
