if you can succesfully breed bettas then your on a role. For juveniles at least 12 dollars a pop and that is aussie money. so 5-6 U.S

You won't get the same amount that the store sells them for. You might be lucky if you sell them for a dollar each to an LFS. Angelfish would probably be a better route as you don't have to put so much care into the fry as you do with bettas. The parents do most the hard work.

Bettas can also be rather expensive and time comsuming to raise not to mention you'll need 100+ mason sized jars to separate the males into. You will also need to change water out of the jars everyday.

Rift lake cichlids are another fairly good bet, being on the slightly more expensive side and rather popular.

Then there are always livebearing fish, though you wont get much money for them.

Fish really aren't a good profit making machine anyway...unless you go large-scale. They do take a lot of time and money and space. After all of the food and effort...I've heard a lot of people say it wasn't worth the money they got back. Plus, a lot of people get stuck with the fish that the LFS's won't take...then what do you do with the 50 remaining bettas you have (or any other fish).

And with bettas, you'd have to have somewhere to keep the males separated when they get older; this can mean 100-150 separate containers. As mentioned, bettas are already readily available and so there isn't much of a market for them...unless you buy fancy breeder bettas and try that. Even then, you're faced with many of the same problems.

Whatever you do, research the heck out of it first, and have a backup plan for leftover fish.

find what the LFS are looking for. One i go to say that green terrors are rare and they never get them. The next i went to was sold out but he ordered one for me. he actually laugh when i told him that they said that green terrors are. only about 20 miles seperate the two stores also. but as leopardess said that fish are not money making unless you go large scale. i would have to agree

Discus.

You would need lots of space I would think... And, expertise at shipping them fish.

They aren't glamourous fish, but rosy, aka feeder fish, would probably be a way to make a little money. If you kept a male and two or three females, you shouldn't have any problem getting them lay eggs. They usually do this on something like a piece of slate, or a broken clay pot. Then just move this to another tank, make sure to keep bad eggs out, and in a few days you should have some fry. If you had a few extra aquariums and the space, you could raise them to various sizes and could probably sell them yourself (through an ad in newspaper classifieds) as "Healthy Feeders" as the ones in stores usually aren't. You could probably also sell them to bait shops since all these fish are are fathead minnows, provided you didn't have a problem with people using them as bait.

Perhaps you should elaborate more on why you want to breed fish. Because then we could help you more.

As mentioned, zebra plecos would bring in lots of money, but go for upwards of 100$ per fish.

Discus are also quite expensive and need EXTENSIVE care as juveniles and require quite a bit of tank space.

Most fish that would bring a "return" bring a return for a reason, either that they are nearly impossible to breed and therefore there arent' many around, or are very expensive to buy/sell, or have special requirements that make them too much to handle for the every day aquarist.

Are you looking for a big investment and large scale setup? That is more or less the only way I can see it being worth it. I suppose you could breed fish for food/bait - I don't know, that's just not my thing so I couldn't help you out there.

I'd say breed dwarf cichlids(Rams, Apistos) and sell them online.

i hear you can make $10 for each fry of a swordtail or platy, on account of how difficult they are to breed.
