My fish have ich

hey guys,
well, 2 days ago i noticed a small white spot on one of my fish, now 2 days on, the fish is covered with white spots and so are other fish!
i know this is called ick cos i have had it and treated it before.
anyway, i bought 2 bottles of chemicals to treat it
was was called "fungus and fin rot remedy"
and the other "white spot remedey"
well last time this happened i used the fungus and fin rot remedey and it worked,
but on the label it says to use at half dosagefor small fish and tetras which is what i mainly have in the tank.
should i give them full dosage and kill the fungus quickly or not?
i have already added the "fungus and finrot" at a dosage of 5ml per40 litres of water. is the enough or to little?
also the label says to remove carbon from ym filter as it removes the chemicals,
well i do have carbon in my filter but it has been in there for 6 months now so will it still take the chemicals out or not? cos i have heard that carbon is only active for about 2 weeks when used in a tank?
also, should i have used the "white spot remedey" instead of the fin rot remedey?
i used the fungus and finrot remedey cos the fins on some of my fish are looking bad?
also, i just bought soem rummy nose tetras to add into the tank. is it safe to add them after i have dosed the tank? i have no where else to put them?

Get a medicine called QuICK cure. Take the carbon out of your filter until treatment is over. Raise your tank temperature to about 80-82 degrees, add some aquarium salt to the tank, and follow the directions of the QuICK Cure. You should be fine in about 3-5 days. GL :)

half the trick of eliminating Ich is getting it right away at the first flashing, certainly at the first white spot

Not if tetras are sensitive to that particular unnamed medication when it's used at full strength

your carbon is valueless as chemical filtration by now... so, why not remove it anyway?

a separate problem. ammonia? salt treatment is good for fin rot.

for like 2 hours i floated the bag in the water and added little bit of tank water to the ag to get them used to it,
they are no swimming aorund in my tank, they dont look distressed, i dont even know how the ick broke out, evreything is within acceptable limits.
but anyway....

I disagree.

Anytime you have an outbreak of ich, I wouldn't say everything is "within acceptable limits".

Water chemistry issues and disease issues are two different things.

i have heard this several times and was wondering if it was true.
cos i think thats why it broke out, my water temp dropped to 20oC over night cos i had teh air conditioner on in my room, also i didnt have the heater connected :(
my bad i know!
i have made myself look like the biggest fool because of all this, using the wrong treatment, adding new fish to an ich infested thank

I would suggest you treating for the most severe problem (ich), and not mix the chemicals. I would do a water change (50% - 75%) while vacuuming gravel. This will get rid of alot of the ich spores and juveniles inhabiting the gravel. Raise temp to 80 or 82, add Quick Cure (dose as directed), and Melafix. I like Melafix cause I can mix it with meds and not have problems, It also acts as a mild antibacterial remedy as it helps heal fin and skin damage. I have remedied fin rot with this once. Just one dose, one time! I would also do water changes a minimum of twice a week till done with treatment. I recommend 2 weeks just to be safe. I have explained this in other threads.

being teh idiot i am i added the fungus and fin rot med
i was wondering if i should do a 75% water change and add teh white spot remedey med??
would this work? or would mixing 2 different meds be lethal to omy tetras?

You never mention what type of fish you have? certain kinds of fish will not tolerate certain kinds of medication... :rolleyes:

for example: scaleless fish. You would have to buy medication for ICH meant for scaleless fish...

it is a pink colour while being see through with red eyes?? but i have 3 of them
yes as you can see, i am a big fan of tetras
oh and teh tank is a 25 gal with a canister filter rated for a 50 gal and i do 50% water changes every sunday

she has a fair few spots on her but all my other fish seem relatively unafected, i can only see one neon with a few sopts on him and a couple of my platies have spots on them..
oh i just realised i should have done a 50% water change before i doesed
should i do that now and just add abit mroe to the tank or just do a 50% change before i dose tomorrow?>

hmm... this seems like an aggression case.

male swordtails are pretty dang aggressive, youd be suprised. one fish thats stressed out might cause the initial outbreak.

Wait till after you treat your tank, and watch for any future aggression from the male swordtails.

tomorrow afternoon before i does again, i will do a 50% change and dose with the same med as last time, i am kicking myself so hard cos i should of used the white spot remedey meds i bought!!!
but i have used the med i am using now before and it cured it in about a week... so here goes...
