Can I put distilled water straight into a tank to top it off or do I need to treat it first?

If it is 100% distilled water, then it does not need to be treated.

The answer is yes. Why would you use distilled water for a fresh water aquarium?

when using distilled water you need to add back in the minerals that were stripped out. Distilled water is not recomended for fw tanks.

I agree ^
Not to mention the costliness of distilled water (unless you make it yourself)

Just to use as make up water due to to evaporation, yes.
Evaporation does not remove minerals from tank thus no issues when using distilled water as topping off purpose.
Distilled water is distilled water. How well it is distilled, it depends on the mfr.
One would be surprised to find the quality difference b/n brand names.

I agree. Whoops I didn't really read the part about topping it off. Sorry. I guess this is what happens when you skim :P
