Pretty fish! This may be a stupid question but is that live bamboo in there????

actually that isn't live bamboo it is probably the "lucky bamboo" they sell in stores.it can grow submerged without melting for some time if the leaves are out of the water but looking at those they are probably going to grow to the top.

I saw the lucky bamboo for sale at PetCo yesterday. It's cute.

The lucky bamboo is cute, but it's really not a species that is meant to be submerged for too long...it'll melt as mentioned above.

Would it melt even if the sprouts were allowed to grow above water? If so I wouldn't mind having one in my tank..how hard are they to trim back?

The roots grow perfectly fine in water, but I'm not sure if the trunk in water is problematic let alone some of the leaves.
Obviously, I've not tried it. Here is some info on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dracaena_sanderiana
According to the wiki article, if the leaves are above the water, they'll do OK.
