Is it abnormal/unusual for a yellow lab to have light black vertical bars on it's body? My largest/most mature lab is a bit of a dirty yellow right now and has light black vertical bars on his/her body. The black on his/her dorsal and anal fins is jet black just as it should be.

Sounds like mood bars.. are they faded and go away at times ?

I think Pitt is on the right track.

Those bars only show in some that are from a different part of Lake Malawi. Coloration is also dependent on quality of the blood line. When colors are not pronounced, it is usually indication of a faulty breeding. The stripes you see are there on all of them but good color -i.e. jet black with vibrant yellow, will over-shadow the barring making it hard to spot.
