Sigh - Angel Aggression issues already

Well, as those that read my stocking post know, I have a 60 gallon tank that I was hoping to use angelfish as the centerpieces of. My plan was to start with 6 small angels and see how we did from there. Many people felt that with that many and that sized tank I would likely be OK. I might have to worry about aggression if two eventually paired up, but it was possible I would be OK. My tank is fairly heavily "planted" as well.

The best laid plans, we all know how that goes. What I ended up starting with were three medium angels. Two gold veils and a regular koi. All have bodies about silver dollar sized. Initially, the two golds were always swimming side by side and though they would occasionally dart at the koi, there was no real aggression. Now, two weeks in, one of the gold angels is contantly after the other gold angel. The bullied gold spends a lot of it's time hiding under a large "old stump" I have in there. He does come out to eat and, surprisingly, there isn't much aggression at feeding time.

So, I have a couple of options. I can return the more aggressive gold. I could get several more angels of the same size to spread out the aggression or I can leave things as they are and see if they "work it out". Thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

How long has this been going on? I would add another 3 or 4 then let a pair form and rehome the rest. Then you could resume with stocking the tank.

Thanks Razzle, I noticed the aggression starting a few days ago. I watched to see if things would settle down, but it's not changed much.

They won't work it out.You will always have issues with these fish.Adding more may help. You may want to just start over if you know you can return them. Adding all of them at the same time would probably be your best bet IMO.

Thanks so much for the input guys! So, more is likely better. Got it. I won't be able to return these to where they came from - they were ordered. That's how I ended up with three instead of six. Two arrived dead and a third died the second day. They were also larger than I expected. I'll bet you don't hear that often - LOL.

However, I have finally found what I think is a good LFS and I'm sure they would likely take one or all. I'd rather not do that, but will if it's for the best...I may just try adding 3 more to spread out the aggression.

ETA: Do you think my best chance would be to give the most aggressive one to the store and get four more or stick with the three I have and add three more? I'd really rather not lose all the money on giving away three and than buying all the rest if that makes sense... I need to check. They might give me credit.

I don't think you even need to rehome them. Many fish decide territories by objects in the tank so if you get 3 more and just before adding them you redo your tank and make it look completly different for the angels they will feel like they are in a new area.

That's encouraging Razzle and makes sense. Now to see if I can find three more angels of a similar size locally. I would think, in this instance, "size matters"? At least somewhat.

I found out that 3 isnt a magic number too. Does the aggressive one still bother the koi? If not the koi could be female. The two fighters a probably males. ....My two males tolerate each other most of the time . The fighting gets bad when the pair spawn. They both team up on the 2nd male. He gets some shots in too.

Neither are particularly aggressive towards the koi, Angel. So you could be right and "she's" a she. LOL

Well, I didn't want to do it because I'm not convinced my cycle isn't completely stable yet, but I am really good about testing and changing water. Daily if needed. I work from home. So, I now have a completely rearranged tank (that was fun in a 24" deep tank with fish and water!) and three new angels of the same size. Two very pretty marbles and a black. The "A" gold angel is still picking on the gold angel "B". Sigh. However, it seems to have diminished considerably. I'll just have to watch it closely and if it's too much, then "A" is going to get traded back in. I must admit part of the reason I've hesitated to do it is that the gold veils are gorgeous and quite hard to find locally.
