Some sites on the net say leave your water to stand 24hrs before you use it. Others say you just have to use water conditioners. However i've found yet another one or two that say do both.

To be safe i've been doing both, is it really neccessary? Not that i mind at all, would just like to know for sure...

I don't think that's necessary. From what I've heard they do the same thing. Both get rid of chlorine, so why do both?

Now that I think about it more, use de-chlorinator definatly. I'm not sure if just letting it stand removes chloramine but I don't think it does. Also, de-chlorinators could remove other bad things in the water, not just chlorine.

That's what i figured, just wasn't sure if letting it stand was doing something other than removing the bad stuff.

Thanx for the advice, now he doesn't have to wait for clean water! :)

Letting it stand does not remove chloramine. Definitely stick with the dechlorinator and you don't have to let it sit for 24h if you don't want to :).

I second that vote - use the de-chlor chemicals rather than letting it stand. You can do both, it won't hurt anything, but it's not really necessary. Also, if you are adding water right from the tap, adding de-chlor, and putting it in the tank, you're better able to control the temp of the new water to match the temp in the tank - this is more important in smaller tanks than it is in larger tanks (depending on the volume of water that you're changing), since you're less likely to cause a temp spike in a bigger setup than you are in a smaller one.

Good question though. :)

Yah, it wouldn't make sense if it did, because even if it did remove the chlorine isn't chloramine chlorine and ammonia added together? So I don't see how that would remove ammonia.

Thanx for the heads up on the tank temp, i usually change out 50 - 100% depending on the water quality and if i'm only changing a bit i add the new water slowly so as not to shock him.

I'm new to this so i'm going to make mistakes, just don't want to make any that'll affect my boy.

100% is a big water change! Make sure it's the same temp as the old water! It'd probably be better to do 10% daily changes, if you can.

100%? 10-30% more often would probably be less stress to the fish. On my 150 with my bigger, messier fish, I usually do 50-70%, but I wouldn't do more than that.
