I have a 75g sa/ca tank. I have it setup with some driftwood and slate, but am not happy with the way it looks. I'm looking for some tasteful, possibly simple, aquascaping ideas. Substrate is pool filter sand, and my fish love to dig, so plants are out of the question. Pics would be great!!

Pics would be great..hard to recommend something. Though I am sure the slate is functional, it doesn't come across as being that natural in a SA/CA tank, IMO.

Here is my setup now, just kinda threw it together. Im definitely open for suggestions though, even a complete overhaul if neccessary!

I like the idea, but I've had the wood I have now in my tank for about 4 months, and it won't stop leaching tannins. I'm tired of the water turning tea color.

I think you have the same "issue" I had with my 75g 'scaping (see here). :) Basically, your scaping looks too "artificial" -- like someone came along and placed rocks and drift wood according to a plan, instead of looking like a real river bed, where rocks and wood jumble together naturally.

Here's what I would suggest trying:

+ Big messy pile of the dark slate on each end in the rear
+ Large sandy colored pieces in the front middle
+ Messy pile of drift wood either right of middle or left of middle

Also, I think I see a mix of African and Amercian cichlids (severum, frontosa, jewel, duboisi??, polleni???) -- might want to double-check the requirements of your fish and make adjustments if needed.

Good luck with the tank!

I have mostly american cichlids, the only one that is not is the frontosa. I have a vieja, jewel, convict, frontosa, gt, jd, and green sev. Clown loaches, tiger botias, angelic botia, pictus cats and a royal pleco on the bottom.

I think you need some color, maybe some live plants? I have severums, pictus cats, and gymnos in my tank, with a HUGE amazon sword, and they can't pull that thing up if they tried due to the massive root system. It really looks cool, and adds a lot of space for the fish to hang out in peace.

I am wondering if I could get some large plants, and kinda build the rocks around them to keep the fish away. Would this be ok for the plants?
