Did I kill my filter?

I have ALWAYS had troubles with my Eheim 2213; I bought it used, and even when it was full, the suction just seemed to fail every now and again.

Well, this time, I think she's had it.

I took it all apart to clean the media, did everything right, and, with a siphon on the out-take AND the intake, can still not get water to flow back into the filter. :(


Anyone have any suggestions?
 
Make sure the hoses and valves are clean/open, and check the impeller and shaft for wear. I won a used 2215 on e-bay a while back. It worked when I hooked it up, but made a lot of noise. I took it apart, and noticed that the impeller shaft looked a bit odd. It had about 3/16" of bare metal on the ends, and the ceramic coating the rest was green. Eheim shafts are solid white ceramic, so I ordered a new one. After I installed the new shaft it still made noise, so I ordered a new impeller. When the new impeller arrived I noticed that the center hole was just large enough to fit over the (proper) shaft, while the old one was nearly twice as big, almost certainly worn so badly from the wrong impeller shaft. Runs better than ever now, and it's completely silent.
 
Not sure about Eheims, but I know for Rena's the instructions say that it's important that the canister top is a certain distance below the surface of your tank. Also states that it's critical for there to not be too much slack in the in/out tubing. So, basically, suggesting you check on the placement of your filter.

Make sure the o-ring that seals the top to the canister is in good shape and make sure the canister sits below the tank for it to siphon correct.

Check other o-rings where the hoses connect.

Also look to see if the impeller is even working when you plug it in.

That's all I can say..... My two new 2213's run great.
 
Did you totally take apart the thing to clean it? How was the impeller?
 
Hey guys...

I am SO glad I went Newbie Forum...

Inlet and Outlet hoses required minor juxtaposition to fix the situation. No lasting damage was done to the system, as both ends were actually IN the water.

JUST A TIP: For anyone else that occasionally makes this error, use masking tape on one set, so as to not confuse the ends. :(
 
When I installed my Eheim I made sure that the dis-connector thingys that have the levers that you turn to stop the water were going the way the water is flowing threw the tubes when open. So that way I never mix up which ones which.

Unless that's not what your talking about, if not ignore what I just said haha.

Edit: NVM! I get what your talking about now and it wasn't what I thought :o
