I was told by a Discus breeder all the problems with my discus in my 38 gallon tank. He told me I needed to use Metronidazole in my tank. My problem is I can't seem to find in our area. I had to order it, I raised the temp in the tank and I am about ready to complete a 50% water change does anyone know any other ideas to help them make it until my meds come in? Thanks very much. My 55 gallon has three discus for the time being and seem to be fine.:help2:

it would help if we knew exactly what problems you are facing with this tank, but from your mention of metronidazole, sounds like a parasite problem. which parasite are you dealing with here?

Sorry, was changing the water in the tank 1/2 have two discus in the 38 gallon tank. Parameters are ph 6.4, ammonia 0, nitrates <0.5, nitrites 0, temp 84 and going up, gravel, 4 black neon tetras, 1 farlowella, live plants, change water once a week, feed blood worms at night, flakes or discus pellets morning, cascade 1000 filter; give an idea what is in the tank and para's. He stopped eating 3 days ago, color is real dark, flipping fins quickly now, staying in corner and fins staying near body all the time, floating at an angle now. No visible problems outside of body, guessing an internal problem like you said. which parasite it is I am not sure, he told to put a air stone in the tank and it would be fine to use with the other fish.

Any ideas?? Considering using Para-guard or Praz-Tastic and wondering if safe to use in tank with other fish or should be used in hospital tank? Thanks Very Much!

if the affected fish are in with other fish then it is a wise idea to treat the whole tank, since the parasites are most likely affecting all fish in the tank, even if you can't see outward signs in all the fish. double check to make sure the other fish are not sensitive to certain medications.
so you don't know exactly what parasite you are dealing with? might be a good idea to get an exact diagnosis before beginning treatment, IMO, then you know exactly what needs to be done instead of the equivalent of shooting while blindfolded.

38 gallon and discus would be my best guess as to what is wrong. Metronidazole is also sold as Aquazole if you can find any of that.

Thanks for the advice on the tank size, never had a problem before. Actually had some problems in my 55 gallon tank with what I believe is the same problem with the same symptoms. When my wife and I move I am considering getting a 120 gallon tank and maybe 10 discus.

Can't agree more, hello Tim! I have a book on Discus Care which identifies many types of illnesses. Thanks for the advice. My other tank 55 gallons has three discus and a Farlowella, a big one; two of the discus a pair laid eggs last night.

Talked to National Fish Pharmaceutical told them all the symptoms of my Discus and they said the fish has Gill Flukes and to treat with Praz-Tastic to remove internal parasites per the directions which is 10-14 days with a 25% water change before treating tank and remove the charcoal filter from water filter. Hope it works. Thanks for the advice we will see.
